About me

Hi! My name is Barry Stewart,
I’m a photographer from Kent.

My name is Barry Stewart, an amateur photographer based in Margate. Growing up near the coast sparked my lifelong passion for the outdoors and for capturing its beauty through my camera lens. Whether I’m walking along the Kent coastline, hiking in the Lake District, or riding the London Tube, I find inspiration in both natural and urban settings. I particularly enjoy photographing mountain landscapes, and the dynamic energy of cityscapes in bustling cities like London.

Photography in Kent has a distinct edge: it’s a county where history, coast, and countryside collide in ways that keep photographers busy year-round.

Kent’s nickname, the “Garden of England,” isn’t just marketing. Rolling orchards, hop fields, and wildflower meadows provide endless material for landscape work. Sunrise over fields near Ashford or the patchwork hills of the North Downs can shift from gentle pastels to dramatic skies within minutes.

Then there’s the coast. Whitstable is famous for its oyster shacks and working harbour—perfect for documentary-style shots. Further east, Margate and Broadstairs offer retro seaside charm with colourful beach huts, arcades, and tidal pools. Head to Dungeness, though, and you get something totally different: a stark shingle desert, abandoned boats, and the hulking power station looming in the background. It’s bleak, but striking, and attracts photographers from across Europe.

Kent also delivers when it comes to heritage. Canterbury Cathedral’s gothic arches, Leeds Castle’s reflection in its moat, and Dover Castle’s clifftop presence are classic subjects. But the smaller details—the weathered doorways in Faversham, or the quirky signage in Deal’s old high street—often make stronger images than the big postcard shots.

What makes photography in Kent so rewarding is its variety. Within an hour’s drive, you can move from medieval ruins to wide-open beaches, from manicured gardens to raw industrial grit. Whether you’re after dramatic landscapes, quiet details, or human stories, Kent gives you plenty to work with.

Dog Photography

As a lifelong dog lover, I enjoy finding new ways to capture the unique personalities of my furry companions. One way I’ve found to do so is through dog photography.

Polaroid Photography

I have always been a fan of the classic Polaroid camera. It brings back memories of my childhood when I was given my first Polaroid camera when I was just a kid.
